1st of May in Berlin

A little bit of Anarchy - for one night

In Germany the first of May is a public Holliday, ironically labeled “the day of work”, thousands of people take to the streets and demonstrate for better wages, cheaper living conditions and the like. Many families use the day to go to a lake, or grill in a park or go to one of the many street festivals.

But then there’s also the Krawalltouristen, or “riot tourists”. People from all over Europe and Germany come to Berlin on the first of May just to wreak chaos. They usually enter leftist demonstrations, and using literally using the other people around then as human shields. From the centre of the demonstration, they then hurl bottles, rocks and fireworks at the police, at shops or banks.

The good news; Its been getting better every year, for the last 20 years. And maybe one day, It will be a day where everyone can go out and have fun, without having to fear be struck in the head by a rouge cobblestone.

  3. Any excuse for a bit of chaos. When it's completely undirected it's utterly disgraceful.
